Renovation

Mint Green hosted a fabulous estate sale recently at The Landings and although I was late in the day I still scooped up some great items. A pair of wall sconces were on my “must have” list and I was delighted to see that they were still there. They really were awfully, badly painted with blobs and blue tack in the candle holders but I loved them because of the structure.
First, I used a single edged razor blade to remove the paste and chip some of the green painted blisters. Then, I gently scoured the surfaces with fine wire wool. Next, after brushing with a soft paintbrush, I applied antique gold and Spanish Copper Rub'nBuff in broad strokes with a clean white cotton cloth. Finally, I applied just the gold with a short tapered paintbrush to add fine lines.
An originally bought to resell in the store. I can’t bear to part with them!
We rescued some weathered timber during a rebuild at our home. I have a passion for restoring
everything and unless it is completely not salvageable, I will find a use for it.
We put too many wonderful finds into landfills. The latest project was building table tops from the timbers that were straight and true. first step was to remove the iron nails and acid wash to thoroughly clean and preserve the gorgeous grain.
There was enough to make two completely different tables. These are very simple rustic pieces which will be used to display the antique silver and medicine bottles at the shop.......unless of course a customer takes a fancy to either one.
The next step was sanding and finishing with fine wire wool before applying a dark walnut stain and a thick coat of orange oil and beeswax.
The two tops are so different, one on is raw sun-bleached and the other is smooth with a fine patina. They are both finished with antique iron straps for decoration and mounted on black cast iron hairpin legs.
